Mission Possible: Max Hollein on the Museum of Tomorrow

The more you know…

Max Hollein: Look, if you’re going to a baseball game, you probably know the sport, the teams, the batting statistics and at least some of the players… Yet, when people come to a museum they often come completely unprepared. You’d have a richer experience if you know a little more about the historical context and the artists in the exhibition beforehand. Some complain that people are no longer reading or studying in ways of previous generations. We see an opportunity and responsibility there to step up and provide those batting stats and launched Digital Stories so that audiences can interact with exhibitions at their own convenience. For Teotihuacan: City of Water, City of Fire, we translated all exhibition materials into the Spanish language to broaden its reach. We launched a Minecraft map of the pyramids that’s been very successful with gamers and our younger, tech-savvy guests. We see our free online courses as another way to help people see the museums as a relevant part of their lives so they identify with and feel like a part of our community. That’d be the biggest accomplishment.

Olga Baird
