A team of scientists led by Thibaut Devièse at the University of Oxford in the UK has found that supercritical fluids (SFs) are much better than organic solvents at extracting lipids from ancient pottery. Not only do SFs extract more lipids but they can extract a greater variety; they are also cheaper, less toxic and can even help to improve the accuracy of radiocarbon dating. And all without requiring the pottery to smashed into tiny pieces.
